Hairdressers put on flamboyant show

Thirteen hairdressing students from City College Norwich showcased their creative talent this week when they sent their hair creations inspired by Moulin Rouge, Rainforest and Jungle and Alice in Wonderland themes down the catwalk in the Flamboyance Hair Show.

The event, sponsored by Goldwell, gave students the opportunity to show their own individually created styles and experience what it is like to work in an artistic team for a catwalk show which also forms a core part of their assessment for the course. Students were responsible for all aspects of the work on display including customising outfits for their models, overseeing make-up (applied by make up students from the college) and the hair styling itself.

The students all work in local salons and come to college one day a week to train towards an NVQ Level 3. They chose to put on a hair show after being inspired by their visit to Salon International and the Alternative Hair Show at the start of their course.

Shane Baldwin, 19, from Norwich said:
“I want to work as part of an artistic team when I leave college so this was a real eye opener in what to expect and gave me the opportunity to learn essential skills for the role such as time keeping. I really enjoyed being part of the show and I would definitely do it again.”

Gillian Carter, Lecturer in the School of Hotel, Hair and Beauty said:
“I am really pleased with what the students have achieved, they have put into practice what they have learnt at Salon International, the Alternative Hair Show and in class. This experience has really built their confidence and improved the skills that will help them develop into senior stylists”
